World Heritage Sites are those deemed by the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) as places of importance to cultural or natural heritage. There are a number of these sites officially declared in the Philippines, with as many as 29 others on the tentative list subject to nomination from the government and approval by the UNESCO.
The following are 3 of the majestic UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Philippines, in no particular order.
3. Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park
Not too many Filipinos know that the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park is in the Philippines, let alone understand that it is one of the most beautiful natural parks in the entire world. This stunning atoll reef is set in Sulu Sea, featuring 2 coral islands and extensive lagoons. Covering an area of 130,028 hectares, it is home to millions of tropical fishes, turtles, corals, and other forms of marine life.
2. Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park
A beautiful underground river winds beneath Puerto Princesa in Palawan. This majestic natural treasure is part of the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park and is officially one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. The river is accessed via a cave which also features several large chambers and millions of stalactites and stalagmites. It flows directly into the South China Sea. The river also has a second floor, evidencing the presence of small waterfalls within the cave. To this date, this subterranean river is not fully explored because some areas are just too deep, with explorers experiencing oxygen deprivation while navigating these spots.
1. Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras
The grand Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras is truly one of the best heritage sites that the country can truly be proud of. Carved along the mountain ranges, these rice terraces are more than 2,000 years old – and made mostly by hand and crude tools available at the time. Aside from featuring a stunning panorama, these rice terraces also showcase the ingenuity, talent, and perseverance of our forefathers.
Truly, the Philippines is a beautiful country, with natural and man-made wonders that every Filipino can be proud of. Other UNESCO Heritage Sites include the Historic Town of Vigan and several Baroque Churches.
